Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is a strategy of financial investment which evaluates not only the profitability but also the social and environmental impact of a business. In general, companies that use sustainability criteria to manage their businesses adapt better to social and environmental change through management of risks which could impact their ability to create long-term value. Socially responsible investors often favour investment in companies included in the "sustainability indexes".
In 2009 Fiat SpA has been recognised as a leader in Sustainability with its inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World and in Dow Jones Sustainability STOXX Indexes receiving a score of 90/100 compared with an average of 72/100 for all companies in the sector evaluated by SAM, the investment group which specialises in Sustainability Investing. The DJSI World and the DJSI STOXX are the most prestigious stock market indexes measuring performance in the area of corporate responsibility and only admit companies which are best-in-class in managing their businesses according to sustainability criteria. In fact, only companies which are leaders in terms of economic as well as social and environmental performance are included.
In 2009, Fiat Group Automobiles participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project for the first time and received a score of 70/100. The CDP is an independent, non-profit organisation whose objective is to assess strategies implemented by the world's largest companies (based on market capitalisation) to fight climate change. On behalf of its investors, every year the CDP monitors the energy policies and performance of those companies as well as their ability to respond to risks and opportunities presented by climate change.
In August 2010 Fiat Group received “Prime” status from Oekom Research , the German rating agency specialized in Socially Responsible Investing (SRI), thereby recommending Fiat shares for investment.
The 1st of September 2010, following Sustainalytics assessment, Fiat Group has been recognized as the Automobiles Sector leader receiving a score of 79/100. Sustainalytics is a global provider of environmental, social and governance (ESG) research and analysis specialized in Responsible Investment (RI) and Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) markets. Following its assessment of Fiat, Vigeo - the European rating agency which analyzes companies for admission to the Aspi and Ethibel indexes - reported above average performance for three of the six areas analyzed: Environment, Business Behaviour and Community Relations. In addition, the Fiat Group sustainability website was named "Best Improver in Italy" at the CSR Online Awards 2009, a recognition established by Lundquist (the strategic communications consultancy) for content and ease of use of sustainability information published online.
