Institutional relationships primarily consist of the provision of information on the performance of the economy in general and individual Group companies in their respective markets, labour-related issues (flexibility, training, pensions schemes, etc.), production and commercial issues (technical, commercial and tax regulation), as well as the interaction between air quality in urban areas and the transport sector (sustainable mobility, the environment, etc.).
The continuous dialogue on the latter issue with public authorities at various levels in Italy (national, regional, provincial and municipal officials) and various EU institutions has resulted in several important projects being established, including the development of natural gas propulsion systems and formalisation of the End-of-Life Vehicle Framework Programme Agreement (with the Ministry for the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea, the Ministry for Economic Development, ISPRA and trade associations).
In addition, Fiat Group participates in the activities of the principal associations which are directly or indirectly concerned with issues relating to the automotive sector.
In Italy, Fiat is a member of:
- ANFIA (Associazione Filiera Industria Automobilistica) which includes Italian companies operating in the car, industrial vehicle, bus, bodyshop and automotive components sectors. The purpose of the association is to represent the associated industries in establishing a dialogue with public and private institutions on issues (technical, economic, tax, legislative, statistical and quality) pertaining to the mobility and transport of people and goods
- NGV System, the association of Italian industry for the use of natural gas in transport
- UNACOMA (Unione Nazionale Costruttori Macchine Agricole), which represents, in Italy and abroad, Italian makers of agricultural equipment, construction equipment and components to incentivize the mechanisation of agricultural activities and promote the development and technological renewal of the existing park of agricultural equipment.
Fiat's contribution to UNI (Ente nazionale italiano di unificazione) and CUNA (Commissione tecnica di Unificazione dell’autoveicolo) is also significant. These groups define standards for automobiles, promoting technical harmonisation globally and making a fundamental contribution to road safety and respect for the environment.
Also at the national level, Fiat Group sectors participate in ATA (Associazione Tecnica dell'Automobile) which was established in 1948 for the purpose of spreading and expanding automotive technology in Italy.
Finally, through regional industrial confederations and trade associations, the Group participates in the activities of Confindustria, the principal organisation representing companies in the manufacturing and service sectors in Italy.
At the international level, the Fiat Group is a founding member of ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association) whose membership consists of the 15 European car, truck and bus manufacturers. ACEA’s principal activities include: participation in the EU legislative process relating to the sector through the definition of common positions, research and analysis on major issues (economic, environmental, commercial, tax), distribution of information on those issues to its members and the public, in addition to maintaining and developing contacts with other associations including those from non-EU countries (primarily USA, Japan and Korea).
Fiat is also a member of:
- ECG (European Car-transport Group of Interest), whose membership consists of 86 leading European vehicle logistics companies
- EIRMA (European Industrial Research Management Association), whose objective is to improve innovation, principally through market-focused R&D
- ERT (European Roundtable of Industrialists), whose objective is to promote the competitiveness and growth of the European economy

- Manufuture which brings the principal research centres and companies together for the purpose of developing faster, less costly and more environmentally-friendly production processes for the high value added products of the future.
